Concoct Your Own Cleaning Supplies

In an attempt to "Go Green", "Lessen My Carbon Footprint", and just generally do my part to save the planet, I've been researching making my own cleaning solutions to use around the house. I am also shocked by the high cost of cleaning supplies each time I go to buy them. Which is often since I have three toddlers running around my house.

Bread For Not a Lot of Dough!

I couldn't resist the pun.
I just found out about the most fabulous deal and I've got to share it with you. Our local Dollar Tree dollar store carries Nature's Own Bread- FOR A DOLLAR!
I knew that several Dollar Store chains had started carrying more grocery items, including frozen foods and vegetables, but I didn't realize that they regularly get truckloads of bread too.

Saving on craft projects

I'm a huge knitter and fiber crafter. I love to work with 100%wools or cottons but they can cost a lot of money. I have been going to Goodwill especially after winter and buying sweaters and taking them apart for their yarn.

If you are into felting, you can just wash the sweater and use the parts for felting projects.

I'd Like to Buy A Vowel

One of my favorite new obsessions on the web is www.Etsy.com . It is a haven for artsy-craftsy folk who make just the neatest things. From handbags to baby items to jewelry, if it can be crafted you will find it here. Why should I include this in Thrifty Shopping, you ask?

Cracking the Coupon Code

Okay- I am not a very technical gal (more right-brained, not left) but I have started to decode the math and science behind using coupons. If you really want to start saving cash at the checkout, here are some tips that can be really helpful in making those small amounts add up to big savings:

One Man's Trash...

We have entered my favorite time of year: Yard Sale Season!
I don't know what it is about a good bargain, but I can't pass one up. All I have to see is the sign posted in the front yard and I immediately slow down and start searching the driveway for treasure. Yard sales are an excellent way to find things you need (and a few things you don't!) for a steal.

Be Your Own Library

I don't seem to be able to find the time to get to my local library lately. Even if I did, I don't know that I'd be able to read a book and return it by the due date to avoid a late fee. Pre-children, I used to borrow at least 5-6 books a month and read in all my free time. Used bookstores were also a favorite haunt of mine.

What Can You Get For a Dollar?

I love the dollar store! I can get sucked in there for an hour or more, just strolling up and down the aisles, looking at all the neat stuff that is ONLY A DOLLAR! While some of it is junk (i.e. clown figurines and seashell art), there are actually some great things to be found at the dollar store. Here's my list of great finds.

1. Gift Bags and Gift Wrap

Freecycle!

I have been a member of Freecycle.org for quite some time now and I am amazed at the things I have both received and given to folks for absolutely no money at all.

Coupons 101

To get the most value from shopping with coupons, it pays to know a few things in advance about store policies and also how coupons work. This information has been very helpful to me and so I am passing it along for you to benefit from as well.

To maximize your saving potential:
