Concoct Your Own Cleaning Supplies
In an attempt to "Go Green", "Lessen My Carbon Footprint", and just generally do my part to save the planet, I've been researching making my own cleaning solutions to use around the house. I am also shocked by the high cost of cleaning supplies each time I go to buy them. Which is often since I have three toddlers running around my house.
With a squirt bottle from the dollar store, some vinegar and baking soda, you'd be amazed at how sparkly clean you can get your house. Now if I could just find someone else to do the cleaning for me...
NOTE: Never mix cleaning products containing bleach and ammonia as dangerous fumes will result.
General Purpose Cleaner:
1 teaspoon borax
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vinegar
1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
2 cups hot water
Combine all the ingredients. For a more pleasant smell, use lemon juice instead of vinegar. Be sure to label the bottle accordingly.
Easy Scrub
3/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup borax
dishwashing liquid
Combine the baking soda and borax. Mix in enough dishwashing liquid to make a smooth paste. If you prefer a pleasant smell, add 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice to the paste.
You can use an old toothbrush or other scrubbing brush to apply.
Carpet Freshener
1 cup crushed dried herbs (such as rosemary or lavender)
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons baking soda
Combine all the ingredients in a large jar or other container with a tight-fitting lid. Shake well to blend. Sprinkle some of the mixture on your carpet, let it sit for an hour or so, and then vacuum it up. The powder will neutralize any funky odors and give your carpet a clean smell. And if your toddler tries to eat it, you won't have to call poison control!
