Freecycle!
I have been a member of Freecycle.org for quite some time now and I am amazed at the things I have both received and given to folks for absolutely no money at all.
The premise of Freecycle is that you offer items to other members that you yourself may have no more use for, but you don't necessarily want to end up in a landfill. Plenty of things that you may no longer need may just fit the bill for another member. Here's an example:
I had TONS of empty glass baby food jars that I was recycling while my twins were just starting on solid foods. Instead of throwing these away, I posted a message on the Freecycle website in my town offering these to any member who needed them. These jars are very handy for storing small craft items such as beads, keeping nails and screws organized in your toolbox, or letting your kids decorate them and turn them into votive holders orvases. Members responded, requesting that they be the recipient of these jars and I made a decision on who would get them. The gal I chose then came by and picked them up off my front porch and voila! stuff was reused rather than thrown away.
Now I know you're thinking "Whoopee. Empty baby food jars, that sounds like garbage", but I have given and received many more valuable things as well. A sand/water table, a Senseo coffee maker, kids clothes, plastic hangers, a bathroom sink... the list goes on.
The rules to freecycle are simple: Everything you offer up on the site must be completely free. There is also no requirement that you be in need in order to receive items. Folks offering up items may choose whomever they like to receive what they're giving away. Some people draw names from a hat, others may ask you to tell them a joke. Still others just choose the first person to respond to their posting.
Membership is free; there are 4,346 groups across the globe that you can belong to, so chances are there's one near you. Check it out at www.freecycle.org

I'd love to hear your stories about Freecycle; stuff you have given or received, people you have met, the farthest you've gone to get something. Feel free to post here.
